Larry the Cable Guy makes America guffaw with his country boy antics and redneck comedy.  His name has become a household word around the country.  Larry the Cable Guy has made the phrases “Git-R-Done” and “Lord, I apologize” catchphrases for young and old alike.  Is Larry really the southern redneck he appears?

Who’s Daniel Lawrence Whitney?

Larry the Cable Guy’s real name is Daniel Lawrence Whitney. Born February 17, 1963, in Pawnee City, Nebraska, friends and family called him Larry while growing up on a pig farm there. When he was 16, he moved to West Palm Beach, Florida, where his father, a preacher, took a job as the principal of the King’s Academy elementary school.

Larry went to high school and worked at Wendy’s, then started flexing his comedy muscles at amateur night at the local comedy clubs in West Palm Beach. In 1991, he started calling radio stations and creating fictional characters. One of his friends asked him to call in as a cable installer and Larry the Cable Guy was born.

America Loves Larry the Cable Guy

Once Larry started doing radio comedy, Americans began to fall in love with the redneck with the thick southern accent. He unabashedly shot out politically incorrect zingers and used his character’s bizarre family to express jokes about taboo subjects such as mental and physical handicaps, obesity and the elderly. Instead of angering listeners, they fell in love with his hokey, ribald character.

When Larry the Cable Guy hooked up with Jeff Foxworthy, Bill Engvall and Ron White for the Blue Collar Comedy Tour in 2000, the magic really started. He did two more Blue Collar tours, plus released solo CD’s of his individual work, three of which went gold. He has starred in his own television specials and been in several movies.

Larry’s Personal Life

Larry the Cable Guy’s thick southern drawl, redneck speech and farm boy attire are part of his persona, but don’t actually reflect the man who plays the character, Dan Whitney. In fact, the act is so convincing, many people are surprised to find Dan Whitney doesn’t even have a southern accent. In fact, he’s not much like the rowdy, homespun Larry dressed in old jeans and flannel shirts with the sleeves hacked off.

Larry is married to his wife, Cara, a former radio personality herself. They have two children, son Wyatt and daughter Reagan. Larry is a huge Nebraska Cornhuskers football fan and has homes in both Lincoln, Nebraska and just outside Orlando, Florida.

If you ever get a chance to attend a Larry the Cable Guy show, it would be well worth your time. His concerts draw fans in by the truckloads, ready to howl with laughter, and they are never disappointed. Larry’s sense of humor may be considered raunchy and warped by some people, but the majority of the country is enamored of this good old boy. Throw on your best jeans and flannel shirt, pack your sense of humor and head to a venue featuring Larry the Cable Guy. You’ll have more fun than a redneck at a tractor pull, that’s for sure.
